1954: - Charlton Athletic’s South African centre-forward Eddie Firmani transferred to Italian side Sampdoria for a reported fee of £35,000.

1959: - Manchester United beat Bayern Munich 2-1 in the pre-season friendly in Munich as goals from Denis Viollet and Albert Quixall gave the English side victory. Quixall’s goal became one of the quickest ever recorded from a kick-off as he scored 4 seconds from the start of the second-half, when he shot from 48 yards after receiving a pass from Viollet. The game however also saw the sending-off of both Joe Carolan and Albert Quixall.

1959: - Billy Price scored from 3 penalties, in a first game as captain; as Falkirk recorded a 3-0 win over Hamilton Academicals in a Scottish League Cup tie.

1965: - Peter Watson, sustained a back injury during Southend United’s pre-season friendly against Elinkwijk (Vorn) which virtually ended his playing career.

1984: - Gordon Strachan announced his move from Aberdeen to Manchester United for a fee of £500,000. There was also some controversy as the German club FC Köln claimed he had promised to sign for them.

2003: - British Sky Broadcasting paid 510 million Euros to broadcast the FA Premier League for three years from 2004-2007.

2006: - Gary Taylor Fletcher of Huddersfield Town scored the 500,000th goal in English League football when he struck in the 79th minute of his side’s League One clash with Rotherham United. The night began with 499,937 goals already having been scored since the Football League began in 1888 with 485,405 in the Football League and 14,532 in the FA Premier League.

2006: - Sol Campbell completed his transfer to Portsmouth from Arsenal on a free transfer, agreeing a 2-year contract. 2008: - Gretna FC were formally liquidated.
