17 August

1929: - George Brown transferred to Aston Villa from Huddersfield Town. The centre-forward who was a former pit-boy was a prolific goalscorer and when he retired from football his record was 268 goals in 445 League games.
1930: - Thames signed Moses Russell from Plymouth Argyle. The full-back played in 13 games for Thames.
1933: - Charlie Fletcher signed for Brentford from Clapton Orient. Between 1931 and 1939 he played in 317 League games and scored 89 goals for Brentford, Burnley, Ipswich Town and Plymouth Argyle.
1957: - Johnny Morris was sent-off during Leicester City’s pre-season trial match. So far this is the only occasion that such an event occurred in the whole of the League’s history.
1966: - Jim Forrest scored 5 of Glasgow Rangers’ 8 goals against Stirling Albion in a League Cup game at Anfield.
1999: - To honour Nelson Mandela following his stepping down as South Africa’s president an all-star match organised by FIFA was played between a Mandela XI and a FIFA World XI at Ellis Park. In front of a crowd of 40,000 the Mandela XI featured amongst others: Lucas Radebe, Mark Fish, Celestine Babayaro, Samuel Kuffour, Kalusha Bwalya, Hossam Hassan, Benni McCarthy, Nwankwo Kanu, Titi Camara and Shabani Nonda. The FIFA World XI included players such as Jorge Campos, Taribo West, Rigobert Song, Branco, Dunga, Thomas Haessler, Mustapha Hadji, Luis Hernandez, Viorel Moldovan, Murat Yakin, Lubomir Moravcik, Abedi Pele and Jean-Pierre Papin. The game ended 2-2.
