1961: - Tony Knapp transferred to Southampton from Leicester City for £20,000 after appearing in only 86 games for Leicester City.

1966: - Tottenham Hotspur paid a record fee for a half-back when they paid £95,000 for Mike England from Blackburn Rovers.

1966: - George Kinnell moved to Oldham Athletic from Stoke City for £20,000.

1976: - General Omar Carlos Actis, the President of the 1978 FIFA World Cup organising committee was murdered by terrorists in Buenos Aires.

1987: - The President of the Confederation of African Football died in Addis Ababa. Ethiopia’s Ydnekatchew Tesseme who had been a player, coach, lecturer and champion of African football lost his battle with cancer.

1989: - Peterborough United opened their league campaign with a 1-0 win over Maidstone, which ensured the club opened without defeat for the 13th consecutive year.

1999: - Robbie Keane completed a £6million move to Coventry City becoming Britain’s most expensive teenager.

2001: - The former Coventry City, Luton Town, Manchester United, Aston Villa, Blackpool and West Ham United goalkeeper Les Sealey died of a heart attack at the age of 43.

2001: - During the game between CSKA Moscow and Anzhi Makhachkala the CSKA goalkeeper Serhiy Perkhum collided head-to-head with the Anzhi forward Budan Budunov. At first the injury appeared to be minor and Perkhum continued to play out the rest of the game. However on the way to the airport he went comatose and died nine days later from a brain haemorrhage.

2005: - Michael Essien joined Chelsea Football Club for £24.4million, from Olympique Lyonnais, in a move which ended weeks of speculation.
