1877: - Christ Church, changed their name to Bolton Wanderers.
1920: - Tom Brittleton, the former Sheffield Wednesday and England right-half made his League debut for Stoke City against Nottingham Forest in a Second Division game. The record books state that he was 41 years old at the time but he was in fact 37.
1920: - Millwall beat Bristol Rovers 2-0 in their first Football League match The Den, in the newly created Division Three South.
1920: - Exeter City played their first match in the Football League. They beat Brentford 3-0 at St James Park.
1954: - Playing with a knee injury the Scottish forward Willie Woodburn took exception to bad foul and retaliated by head-butting a Stirling Albion player during Glasgow Rangers League Cup tie at Ibrox against Stirling Albion.
1965: - Denis Haskow, the Wood Green Town outside-right, collapsed and died during the Spartan League match against Staines Town. He was 41.
1999: - Ruud Gullit resigned as manager of Newcastle United after just 12 months in charge. Newcastle had failed to win any of their opening 5 games and had just lost 2-1 to rivals Sunderland on 25 August.
2007: - Leeds United assistant manager Gus Poyet accused referee Andy D’Urso of having a vendetta against himself, Dennis Wise and Leeds.
