14 August

1933: - New Brighton, signed Lachlan McPherson from Everton after he never really established himself at Goodison Park. His career lasted until 1935, making a total of 318 League appearances and scoring 39 goals.
1948: - Charlie Tully, one of the great players in post-war Scottish football made his debut for Glasgow Celtic in a League Cup match against Morton. After joining from Belfast Celtic he went on to win a medal in every competition which Celtic entered in Scottish Football, playing in 210 Scottish League games and scoring 30 goals.
1950: - The Welsh inside-forward Aubrey Powell transferred to Birmingham City from Everton.
1953: - Harold Bodle moved to Accrington Stanley from Stockport County. He subsequently became manager in 1959 but that only lasted 10 months.
1963: - Peter Thompson moved to Liverpool from Preston North End for a fee of £40,000. An exciting prospect he won Championship medals in 1964 and 1966 and an FA Cup winners’ medal in 1965 while at Anfield.
1977: - 77,691 saw the New York Cosmos beat Fort Lauderdale 8-3 in the North American Soccer League. The attendance was a record for the league.
2006: - It was confirmed that the American businessman Randy Lerner, owner of the Cleveland Browns had reached an agreement of £62.6million with Aston Villa for a takeover.
