27 August

1921: - Chelsea’s George Smith played his first game for Chelsea. He went onto make a 370 League and Cup appearances for Chelsea until a serious injury shortened his career in 1932. He later moved to East Fife.
1988: - Everton’s Tony Cottee scored a goal in 34 seconds and went onto complete a hat-trick in a 4-0 win over Newcastle United.
1991: - Arsenal’s first win of the season a 2-0 victory over Luton Town was marred by the sending off of Anders Limpar.
1992: - Teddy Sheringham transferred to Tottenham Hotspur from Nottingham Forest for £2.1million.
1993: - Brian Horton became the new manager of Manchester City after leaving his post at Oxford United.
1994:- The Tottenham Hotspur chairman Alan Sugar stated that the England coach Terry Venables was still not welcome at White Hart Lane despite the Spurs manager Ossie Ardiles saying the day before that he was welcome.
1998: - Kenny Dalglish was sacked after just 19 months as manager of Newcastle United.
